The Ranch That Raised My Children

There is something about Indian Valley/Midvale, Idaho winters that stays with you forever.

Years ago, when my children were young, we lived on what was part of the Historic 4,000+ acre Longfellow Ranch. Winter mornings meant bundling the kids up until they could barely move, hitching our tractor to a hay wagon loaded with hay, and we’d head out to the field. Dad would drive the tractor and the boys, and I would throw hay off to the cows. Our brand looked like this -2- . We’d throw the hay out to the cows in the shape of our brand, and when we got to the house on the hill, we could see the black cows eating, showing off our brand -2- . Snow crunching under our boots, cold air on our faces, kids laughing and helping where they could — it was hard work, but it was one of the greatest joys of my life.

Those moments shaped our family. And they’re the kind of memories Idaho is made for...

This time of year always brings me back to those days — especially when it comes to food and gathering.

A Simple Idaho Fish Recipe We Love

If you’re looking for something a little different for your holiday table, here’s a favorite Idaho-style recipe:

Wrap fresh trout or salmon in foil with butter, sliced lemon, salt, pepper, and fresh herbs like dill or rosemary. Add a small splash of apple cider or white wine, seal tightly, and cook on a grill, campfire, or in the oven. Simple, honest, and full of flavor — just the Idaho way.

A Little Christmas Secret

The best Christmas meals aren’t fancy. They’re made with good ingredients, warm kitchens, and people you love gathered close. That’s something ranch life teaches you — and it never goes out of style.

I’d like to share the beauty of a historic Idaho ranch with you… this video means a lot to me.

In this video, I walk through two remarkable ranch properties that were once part of the Historic Longfellow Ranch, which supported 19 families in the early 1900s.

One property includes 1,260 acres, offering an incredible opportunity for cattle operations, recreation, hunting, or a legacy ranch holding.
• The second property (currently not on the market, but owners want to sell) spans 282 acres and features a large 7-bedroom ranch home, where the grandparents lived. I lived in the next draw over where the barn and the cows were, years ago, while raising my children.

Together, these properties represent a rare chance to own not just land, but a living piece of Idaho ranching history. Both offer outstanding hunting opportunities for deer, elk, and upland birds, wide-open spaces, and the peaceful lifestyle Idaho is known for.

If you’ve ever dreamed of owning land that tells a story — this is it.
