Starting with Nothing but a Creek

When Andrea first moved off-grid, she had no electricity. Her only resource? A creek for water and kerosene lamps for light. Nights were dictated by the natural rhythm of the sun—she would read a little by lamplight before going to bed early.

A Step Toward Convenience: Propane Power

As her off-grid journey continued, Andrea and her husband upgraded to a propane generator. This allowed them to run a propane-powered refrigerator and stove. However, energy conservation remained a priority—she only ran the generator at night and still had no dryer for laundry.

Hydroelectric Power: A Game-Changer

Today, Andrea and her family live upriver on the Salmon River, where they harness hydroelectric power from the creek. This energy source provides ample power, making off-grid life feel almost like being on the grid! The only challenge? Ongoing maintenance, as leaves and debris must be cleared to keep the system running smoothly.

While hydroelectric power has transformed their lives, there's no calling Idaho Power for help when things go wrong. Thankfully, Andrea’s husband and son have become off-grid power experts—a necessary skill for long-term survival in such remote areas.

The Ultimate Off-Grid Lifestyle

Andrea has lived in several off-grid locations throughout Idaho, including French Creek and Mackay Bar, where she owned a guest ranch. Each place had different energy solutions, from gravity-fed water systems to generator power. Through it all, she has learned that self-sufficiency, adaptability, and a strong support system are key to thriving off-grid.
